Asymmetric Java earrings

Java is Fénix's island: the little girl who walked into the workshop one afternoon with a slice of cake and a wish to enamel, and who taught me that inspiration can come from where you least expect it.

From her I learnt that playing is not the opposite of working. These earrings take that game furthest: on one side, a small, calm half-disc; on the other, a large one with chains that move every time you turn your head.

They are not a pair that copies each other. They are two that understand each other, like a child and a grown-up painting at the same table.

Strawcherry comes from that afternoon too: it is the colour of the jam on the cheesecake Fénix brought.

Java's enamel looks simple and is one of the hardest in the workshop. There is no raised edge to hold it back, so the colour has to be contained with a different catalyst that makes it stop exactly where it should, and it has to be watched all the time.

Each piece also has two planes, and it has to be levelled before enamelling so the colour doesn't run unevenly.

On the large earring, the chains are fitted by hand so they hang at the same length.

They are made on Calle Alameda, in the Barrio de las Letras, in a workshop you can visit.

They bring the game to your face: each side says something different. With your hair up they stand out even more.

You can pair them with the Java S necklace or the Java S ring in the same colour, or mix colours from the series.

The hypoallergenic coating protects the pieces from contact with skin and perfume. Keep them dry and on their own, and avoid putting on perfume while wearing them. With normal use and this care, the gold plating lasts for years.

Store the chain earring laid flat or hanging so the chains don't tangle.
