The story of the piece
Magdalenas y Flores goes back to when Maite, as a little girl, went with her grandmother to the village bakery to make pastries. They kneaded together, made the dough and cut out all the pastries. And it was quite an event: several women from the village would gather, most of them older.
The place smelled of dough. Maite loved sinking her fingers and hands into it and eating bits of it unbaked, and her grandmother always warned her: "Careful, that'll ferment in your tummy." It made her laugh, because nothing ever happened.
At the bakery there was an old-fashioned stool propping the door open and, on top of it, always a bunch of flowers, bright and very country. They would stay there a whole morning, or a whole day, making dough amid laughter and the village women's jokes. To her it felt like living on another planet, but what a good time they had. The collection is a tribute to all of that.
That is why the colours are so vibrant. Maite wanted a really strong coral, because it reminds her of wildflowers, of poppies. And because her grandmother was laughing all the time, always looking for fun and for the bright side of things: Maite remembers her as forever optimistic. She wanted the collection to have that same spirit.
How they are made
The enamelling combines an opaque base with a slightly more transparent one.
The pistils are raised, in relief. To stop them dripping, a denser catalyst is used: that way the pistil stays perfectly defined without the enamel running, and the piece remains light.
The fastening is a 925 silver post with a gold-plated back.
They are made on Calle Alameda, in the Barrio de las Letras, in a workshop you are welcome to visit. If you come by, you will probably see the next pair being made.
How to wear it
They are the small flower of the series, three centimetres across: full of colour and presence, but made for every day. If you'd like the flower in a bigger size, the series also has large earrings, a ring, a pendant, a bracelet, a choker and a brooch.
Care
The lacquer protects the enamel from contact with skin and perfume. Keep them dry and stored separately, and avoid putting on scent while wearing them.
